The review of online reviews

I can pretty much guarantee, that just about everyone has had to deal with bad reviews on their business, services, staff, etc. When it isn’t our own business, and we don’t know the back story, we easily can fall victim to being so aghast and trusting that negative review that we go searching for another option. However, how can we fully trust that what the reviewer is presenting is 100% factual? The answer is, we can’t. The consumers reading the reviews 1. weren’t there 2. didn’t have first-hand experience with the reviewer 3. doesn’t even know the reviewer. Throughout our years in business we’ve had people slander and libel our businesses and name posing context that is inaccurate, hateful, and degrading.

Today, more than ever, our right to freedom of speech has become greater than ever. People write whatever they want, whenever they want, and however they want stopping at no means to defame and destroy a person or business. This age of speaking without thinking and spreading rumors and lies without the facts I’d say has touched just about everyone. Then when the tables are turned, the negative reviewer gets upset and offended. So funny when that happens isn’t it.

When reading online reviews take them with a grain of salt. The positive 5-star reviews are wonderful to a business and they are so appreciated. When you see those negative reviews make sure you consider all the variables. Is what this person saying accurate? Do they have proof or photos or are they just going on a rampage? Does the company have a history of related reviews? Chances are if the reviewer doesn’t have the concrete evidence to support their claims then typically it’s inaccurate.

One additional note in regards to our specific industry, restoration and cleaning, we do what we need to do to satisfy our customers, hands down every time. However, when we are working with insurance companies we have to do what they tell us to do. When customers are asking us to do things that the insurance company will not approve we simply cannot do that. That’s insurance fraud. We follow the instructions given by adjusters as well as industry and corporate standards. We are the ONLY restoration company in over 3 counties fully certified with the IICRC (the industry standard for the cleaning and restoration business). We do our best always and sometimes when people don’t think that’s enough, they’re capable of posting a negative review saying whatever they want providing as many inaccuracies as they want.

We work hard and strive to go above and beyond our customers expectations but we also will not be taken advantage of. We stand firm on our policies and procedures because it allows us to produce the best results possible.

Most Common Fires

Here at Rainbow, we have seen an out of the ordinary amount of fires so far this year. In the  past, the number of fires we would get in a year is now what we see in a month. Restoration work is tough because we have to deal with losses that are extremely devastating and emotions run very high with clients. Our job is to alleviate the pain associated with such a devastation and restore the home or business to original or better condition.

One of the top causes we see are wood stove or chimney fires. The time it takes for a fire of this type to get out of control and is a matter of seconds. This extremely short time frame can lead to panic and inability to get you, family, and pets out in a safe manner.

Moral of the story is that you can NEVER be too careful. Wood burning fireplaces are beautiful and offer a cozy environment but you can turn your back for one minute and have a serious issue on your hands. The 2 top tips we have are: 1. Clean your chimney and 2. Watch what You are doing. Proper maintenance and diligence is key.

Be safe. Don’t leave candles unattended, don’t leave a fire unattended, make sure stove latches are closed completely. Watch the stove- if you’re cooking especially with grease use extreme caution. A fire obviously is extremely dangerous but the dangers can be almost eliminated with a watchful eye and regular maintenance.

Who are our Owners?

April 1, 2015- Rainbow International of Watertown was purchased by Michael and Sissy Colello. Previously, the business was essentially run out of a home with very minimal office, supply, and transportation space. On top of that, it was not accessible to the community it was tucked away and no one knew where we were. As with their other successful businesses, the Colello’s had a promise to ignite exponential growth into the business and move it to where it made sense for our consumers and community.

Business Minded Duo

Michael and Sissy Colello are both local from Jefferson County both growing up in LaFargeville and Clayton, later moving to Watertown. Combined, the duo boasts impressive business developing and operations prowess. Before marrying, Michael attended both Penn State University and SUNY Oneonta where he graduated with a BSBA. Sissy, successfully completed the Licensed Practical Nursing Program through Jefferson-Lewis Boces. She held positions at River Hospital and Samaritan Keep Home and worked as an LPN. Immediately after graduating from Oneonta, Michael joined his parents (then) family-owned business, F.K. Gailey located in LaFargeville, NY. He took over as the managing director, Sissy joined the company three years later after they were married as an administrative assistant. The family owned business was sold by Mike and Sissy in 1998.

In 2000 they started their next venture which is one of their most successful business development projects to date. They purchased, the old and very dated Dunkin Donuts store on Arsenal St. (the only one in Jefferson and Lewis county at the time) and began pursuing the franchise. Extensive training and franchise instruction was required and the wealth of knowledge learned at Dunkin Donuts University made the almost eight year ownership one of the franchise’s most successful company-wide. Their promise to their customers and employees (100+), to give their absolute best is the simple source to their success. Michael was an advisory board member

2005- Michael Colello at the opening of the Lowville, NY Dunkin Donuts. Featured with the stores first manager.

at Dunkin Donuts and worked for them as a consultant even after the sale to the current owners. Their greatest achievements during their ownership include:

  • Business growth from 1-5 locations in less than 5 years.
  • Establishing the 1st Dunkin Donuts on a military base, Ft. Drum
  • Winner of Excellence in Small Business for outstanding business development,
    leadership, and community involvment.

Between 2009 and 2013 they took on many business ventures both together and individually. Sissy purchased the Curves of Watertown franchise where she directly absorbed and grew membership, handled promotions and leads, and also was a certified personal trainer. Michael dipped into another family business, Frontenac Crystal Springs and directly handled the company on all platforms. In 2013 he sold his share of the company when a new venture emerged.

Rainbow International of Watertown popped up and Mike tirelessly began recruiting to increase revenues in the remediation category of the business and explore other avenues for growth. He was upfront from the beginning and always had the intention to purchase. Two years later, he and Sissy, together purchased Rainbow International of Watertown and immediately got to work. Since their purchase, the company has taken on four new employees, moved the business to a more suitable location, completed numerous extended learning courses and taken on a number of certifications. They thoroughly enjoy running a family-owned business and taking on the challenge of a business they had no background in. If you never challenge yourself, you’ll never realize your full potential or growth.

Outside of the office

Michael is the current President of the Watertown Chamber of Commerce Executive  Committee and a Director on the Red Cross.

Mike and Sissy have 3 daughters in their 20s, a son-in-law, a grandson, and a dog.

Sissy also sits on the committee for Back Pack Program through the United Way and has added Rainbow to the list of donation contributors to aid in helping under privileged children in the Watertown City School District bring home backpacks full of food for them and their families.

Together, they are avid gym-goers, enjoy spending time with their family and dog, traveling, and sports-mostly hockey.

Merry Christmas

I bet you’re wondering, where has Rainbow been? It has been awhile since we posted but it’s because currently, we have a lot of positive growth on our hands. The location that we’re at now was previously a carwash and laundromat combination. Well, neither of those two aspects are available any longer. The existing building has been turned into our main office including storage for our vans and equipment.

What the future holds

Laundromat- the previous laundromat already has started to turn into what is called a “Clean Room.” The clean room will be utilized as a contents pack out area where contents such as; valuable possessions, rugs, furniture, etc. from restoration claims will be taken to be properly cleaned. This addition to our facility will be loaded with state of the art equipment and guidelines to make the burden of a loss less tragic for the client. To read and learn more about the process of contents pack out, please see the link provided – Content Pack Out

Carwash- currently, the carwash bays are utilized to have our trucks inside during the cold and blustery winter months. Once winter commences we will be able to start an enormous expansion. The expansion will include MORE SPACE to house all of our vehicles as well as equipment in a resourceful manner and allow for the purchase of more/new equipment.

Current Office- our front office will also be getting an expansion to allow for a waiting/reception area, conference room, full kitchen, and offices in the back.

We really cannot wait for this all to take place and realize that we could not do it without or wonderful clientele. Rainbow Restoration of Watertown has the best customers and we truly appreciate your business. After our expansion commences, probably next fall, we will have an open house to share our successes with all of you.

At this time we’d like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas. We hope you have a wonderful holiday season full of love and hope for a wonderful year ahead. Please note, Rainbow will close on Friday 12/23 at 1:00pm and will reopen on Tuesday 12/27 at 8:00am. We are always open for EMERGENCY RESTORATION via phone at 315-786-7269 and use the option for the telephone answering service. All other calls and emails will be handled on the 27th.

Merry Christmas from Rainbow International of Watertown

The Most Common Water Damage Claims

It’s #WaterWednesday again! In Northern New York we have the privilege of having absolutely gorgeous season, however, we are extremely susceptible to some brutal winters. Winters here are commonly very cold and snow and ice storms are never too far off the radar.

The Top 2 Water Damage Claims In Our Area:

Pipe Burst

Pipe Bursts are easily the number one. It really goes without saying because it does get SO cold here and even the most cautious homeowner can be vulnerable to such loss. Later, we’ll offer some tips to lower your risk of being affected by such a devastation.

Sump Pump Failures

These can get kind of tricky because your insurance policies may have limited coverage or no coverage at all. A lot of sump pump issues arise because of cheap materials, improper fitting pumps, and improper installation. So, when it comes to sump pumps, make sure your not using cheap materials and hire qualified professionals. Investing in excellent equipment could save you from a water loss costing upwards of $10,000.

As we’ve done before, we’ll uncover ways to winterize your home in an effort to save you from disastrous and costly water damages:

  1. Winterize your outdoor hoses and faucets. Turn on the faucets and drain the lines. Locate the shut-off valves and turn off the water to the outside faucets.
  2. Insulate indoor pipes and ensure cold air is not blowing on them. Pack all cracks with insulation and seal off crawlspaces. If you can feel cold air coming in from the outside there is an immense potential for freezing pipes.
  3. Do not turn your heat off or below 55-60 degrees. The most common mistake we see is when people leave on vacation and turn their heat off. It’s a recipe for failure and costly water mitigation
  4. Lastly, don’t try and DIY your water damage. The thing we hear most is that people will try and shop vac up the water and think everything is OK. Not true. Without a professional, you have no idea what’s behind that material. The carpet or drywall may seem or look dry but what lies beneath or behind is where the problem lies.

In any case, the sooner you call the professionals at Rainbow International of Watertown, the better! When you delay the water mitigation process it only makes your claim more costly and extensive.

DIY Mold Remediation:Why It’s a BAD Idea

Thankfully, the internet has provided homeowners all sorts of brilliant ideas on how to DIY mold. As we have known to be true, everything on the internet is NOT a good idea or true. Aside from everyday mold, DIY mold remediation is really not a sound idea. The antiquated method is that bleach can and will kill mold. While that is partially true, when it comes to non-porous building materials, bleach cannot completely kill the mold. Non-porous building materials are classified as glass, metals, hard plastics, wood, and drywall. All which are extremely common places for mold to grow.

Why it doesn’t work.

Surface mold that is growing ON materials can typically be cleaned up with a bleach solution. When mold is growing IN a non-porous object the bleach cannot penetrate into the material to kill the mold. Essentially, this is how the problem began in the first place… Moisture became trapped inside the material and had no place to escape causing it to thrive in it’s environment and grow exponentially.

To ensure the safety and health of your home and family, mold need to be remediated by professionals, and it needs to be addressed as soon as possible. The health risks of mold can pose serious threats due to prolonged exposure.

All in all, most of the calls we receive are when people suspect they may have mold behind drywall, in their floors, etc. These cases require prompt professional attention but in New York State there are a few steps you need to follow:

  1. Call a Mold Remediation professional. The professionals at Rainbow Restoration of Watertown are certified with the State of New York as a mold remediation contractor. Rainbow International of Watertown is the ONLY Certified contractor with the state and certified through the IICRC withing a 60 mile radius. Check here:
  2. Hire a testing company. We are not a testing company, we cannot perform this task. Once you hire out a testing company they will build the scope of work for our professional to follow during the remediation process.
  3. Talk with your insurance agent and see if you’re covered. Sometimes mold is covered but typically it’s not. If you don’t get the mold taken care of whether covered or not, your insurance company can drop you.
  4. Schedule the work.
  5. Post-remediation testing. The testing company will review the work performed and test once completed.

In conclusion, extensive mold remediation cannot be cleaned up by anyone. Especially in the state of NY, there are a lot of steps and you have to hire a certified professional because it’ s the law. Rainbow International of Watertown has completed hundreds of mold remediation projects both in residence and commercial properties. Call the professionals at Rainbow International of Watertown if you ever suspect mold.

Leaks Don’t Get Better

It’s #WaterWednesday!

So you had a small leak in your home. A little bit of water came in but it stopped and you easily cleaned it up.

No big deal right? wrong-003

Unfortunately, no matter what amount of water entered your home, even just a little, can be or lead to be a very serious problem. There could be extensive structural damages hidden behind walls, in the ceiling, or in your floors. Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there.

The first step you need to take is to figure out how water got into your home. Once you know this, you can take proper precautions to make sure it doesn’t happen again as well as prevent any additional leaks. The top calls we receive especially in the winter are pipe burst claims. Honestly, it’s one of the easiest to prevent. When it comes to pipes here’s what you need to do:

  1. Wrap pipes with heat and insulation tape
  2. Seal air leaks. Keep frigid air out of areas where water pipes run by adding insulation and sealing air leaks in the wall and ceiling.
  3. Keep pipes warm. Don’t set your thermostat below 60 degrees.

Here are some additional leak proofing measures:

Address even the smallest cracks- Seal large cracks and gaps with caulk

Seal windows and doors with weatherstripping. This will ensure you keep any weather out!

Direct runoff away from your home. Dip a trench or slope your top soil.

Clean your gutters.

If you’ve incurred water damage, even just a small leak, call the professionals at Rainbow. We can come out and take a look at your property. We’ll be able to tell if there’s any trapped moisture, mold/potential for mold, and give you our professional opinion on what your next steps should be.

Mold Monday-When a small issue turns into a costly problem

Every Monday is now going to be deemed Mold Monday! Every Monday, we’ll uncover mold related topics and hash out a number of frequent and even uncommon issues.

Let’s talk today about a few common place in your home where mold typically grows…the basement, attic, and crawlspaces. Unfortunately, the commonality of these three spaces it that they’re typically dark and damp. Dark+Damp= The perfect location for mold to grow. A lot of people think out of sight, out of mind well that couldn’t be further from the truth. You may be able to put the issue out of your mind but the repercussions of mold growing in your home can inadvertently affect your health. Don’t put it on the back burner! Common health risks of mold are:

  • headaches
  • breathing issues
  • constant cold symptoms
  • skin irritation
  • allergic reactions
  • asthma
  • immune system compromised

Mold grows quickly and thrives in these dark and damp spaces and not only is it extremely detrimental to your health, but also can cause immense structural damage. Another thought to keep in mind is if you’ve ever had any pre-existing situations where mold could’ve potentially grown somewhere where you cannot see. Especially in our area, when the snow melts, basements have a tendency to flood. Even if it’s just a small amount of water mold can grow! Especially underneath carpets, behind walls, and baseboards. If you’ve ever had a problem like this don’t think that just because you can’t see it doesn’t exist. Water and dampness are not your friend.

Once you find mold or think you may have the potential for mold, you need to call the professionals at Rainbow Restoration ASAP. We will schedule a time to come out and assess the mold and will be able to give you an estimate on remediation costs.

We are licensed with New York State as Mold Remediators and certified with the IICRC in mold remediation as well. Keep in mind that as of this year all mold remediation MUST BE done by a NYS licensed remediator which should make Rainbow Restoration your #1 choice for Mold Remediation. If you ever have any questions on mold remedaition or would like to schedule your free estimate, call 315-786-7269.

Snow Storm Survival

In case you weren’t aware, it snowed yesterday. Though we live in the North Country and are pretty accustomed to that type of weather, we need to be more proactive when preparing for the upcoming winter months. Taking precautions and preparing in advance could alleviate a lot of aggravation when winter finally does rear its ugly head.

Survival Kits

  • Prepare your survival kits. Here is a list of what the Red Cross recommends- at least a 3 day supply of water and non-perishable food, flashlight, extra batteries, battery-powered radio, first aid kit, cell phone chargers including fully charged power banks, personal hygiene items, copies of important documents, cash, baby and pet supplies (if applicable), tools, extra blankets, coat, gloves, hat, heating method.
  • Think of all possible scenarios. For example, you should have a kit available at work, in your car, and at home. Think about where a snow storm might leave you stranded.
  • Be proactive. Know the weather forecast. When you plan ahead of time and are prepared for the winter, snow storms and winter weather won’t catch you off guard, and you also won’t be running off to Wal-Mart like 10,000 other people when there’s word of a terrible storm.

Make sure your vehicle is filled with gas

Maintain your heating equipment (*cough cough* get your air ducts cleaned)

Lastly, if you’re going out of town DO NOT turn your heat below 60!! I mean, unless you wanna come home to burst pipes and a major water loss on your hands, then by all means, do it. This exact scenario is where 90% of our calls come from in the winter. Make sure you don’t turn your heat down and also ensure that your pipes are windows are properly insulated.

Get ahead of the game while it’s still early. Don’t get caught in a bad situation because you didn’t make time to prepare for winter. Make sure you call us and trust our services if you ever find your home in a bad spot this winter. We’re on call 24/7 and will be there to help.
